With every thread she wove…

The portrait series „With every thread she wove…“ depicts fictionalized versions of my grandmother, who devoted her life to a writing practice while working as a weaver. Based on her texts, the motifs were created using an AI-powered text-to-image generator, translated into a digital weaving file, and woven on a TC1 Jacquard loom. In the series, I explore the relationships between textile and text, weaving and programming, driven by the question of where there is space for the loom today, and in what form there is space for the continuation and reinterpretation of cultural textile heritage in the present day. How do we protect practices, especially life practices, from preservation and the gaze that extracts this knowledge and history, and how do we create forms of continuity and engagement that not only look from afar but truly create a space for sharing the unfolding history in the here and now? The textile series frames the output of my processual generating and thorough examination and represents a first attempt to approach these questions.
